Patriarchy

Today something very funny happened to me.

With the advent of summer, my long desire to learn swimming finally is seeing the light of the day.

I have rarely used my society swimming pool.

Today wrapped into myself ( as usual 😁), I went towards the changing rooms to take a shower before the swim .

I saw a small side door-like structure and next to it , a big inviting door .

Without giving a second glance I entered the changing room , had a shower and got into the pool .

The room was actually a men’s changing room.

I started wondering why would you have a small insignificant entrance to a women’s changing room as compared to a men’s one ?

The only benefit is that dumb women like me would use it once a while šŸ˜‰šŸ˜œ.

Is this patriarchy?

One more recent experience.

I attended a friend’s wedding.

The haldi rituals before the day of the wedding had sitting arrangements, one for the bride and groom .

The one for the bride was,  a lesser height compared to the groom as if the groom is supposed to be lording over her lifelong.

Is this patriarchy?

The experiences I have had recently don’t seem to end 😁😁.

The day the swimming episode happened, when I was in the lift , a young domestic help was with me.

We got down from the lift and one of her friends called out and I happened to overhear their conversation.

Her friend was asking her why she is not wearing a bindi on her forehead. She replied, a death of a relative has occurred, hence for the next 3 days I have been forbidden by my family to wear it

Is this patriarchy?

My very close college friend has restrictions and her freedom to move, going out with friends everything is controlled by parents .

Is this patriarchy?

Patriarchy comes in different incantation and embodiments.

It catches a woman unaware and impinges her life .

My blog is not about women’s empowerment or finding out reasons for patriarchy.

I through my personal experiences and social interaction feel that patriarchy not only is an assault on women’s rights but it is also a burden on the men.

I am a great fan of men. They are uncomplicated creatures as compared to we convoluted women.

Patriarchy unnecessarily encumbers men to feel and act superior to women .

Patriarchy affects men as the society stereotypes them as having thisĀ  tough no nonsense persona image , the weight of carrying this pulls them down.

Men with empathy and compassion are ridiculed as spineless weaklings .

Neither men nor women need patriarchy or the tangled tortuous implications which it brings.

Guys share your burden, emotions and feelings with your loved ones and it is definitely not manly to suppress all your emotions as one day it could lead to volcanic eruptions .

Here to more egalitarian and gender equality community.ā¤ļø

  1. Great post. There are so many ways the patriarchy is woven into our daily existence, and few people take the time out to recognize what all that encompasses. Asking ā€œis this patriarchy?ā€ is a great start to dismantling it!
