Double edged celebrity

Recently witnessing the shenanigans during the Aryan Khan arrest , made me mull about the celebrity’s and their status ?
Is celebdom/ celebrityhood a curse or a boon in this social media era?

Are celebs created by social media and is their downfall also engineered by them?
In yester era , celebrity status was limited to filmstars and cricketers to some extent.
The mystic , the shroud of secrecy ensured that the audiences lapped up all the filmstars and silver and golden jubilee were a norm for their celebdom.
Fast forward to internet era which has spawned lots and lots of celebrity.
Today any video, any dance, any song, actually anything can catch your attention , becomes viral and you get famous .
Well whether its a 2 mins fame like maggi noodles , is a topic for debate.
Thus celebrity status process has also become democratic and anyone and everyone can aspire for it .
Then what wrong with it ?
This blog will try to take a diverse view on how celebrities gain from their status and then if it brings their down fall , whose is to be blamed?

Celebrities compete for more and more followers

The biggest celebrity Shahrukh Khan couldn’t be saved from this bitter truth.
When you let public into every aspect of your private and professional aspect.
When you dance at private wedding for money
When you sell photos and sneek peek of your wedding, vacation and even your small babies and benefit commercial , can you then complain if this same public doesn’t know where to draw a line and demands more than a slice of your life.
Plus they feel they have a right to comment and interfere in every aspect of your life..

Popularity and longevity of shows like ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ or the latest show on Netflix ‘ Jonas brothers Public Roast ‘
feeds on public voyeurism and the never ending appetite and curiosity of a perceived fairy tale lives of celebrities.
As normal humans going around with our grind , it becomes a diversion from the drudgery of our lives and we start getting slowly invested emotionally in their lives
Remember how the nation erupted when Mihir of ‘ Kyunki saas bhi kabhi Bahu thi’ died , it was like not a story , not a character but someone real , close to us had died.
Move aside TV series and movies now, its the real lives of people, of celebrities which is in vogue now .
How else can you explain the longevity and bizarre popularity of a tasteless and horrendous show called’ Big Boss’?

Kyunki Saas started a never ending soap opera of Saas and Bahu

But I digress
The main focus of this blog is that Aryan episode exposed the fault lines in our society.
*On one side we have a hate spewing, saccharine bigots who hinted on Shahrukh religion, to his flippant remarks at a talk show many years ago .
Everyone wanted to give parenting and moral tips to Shahrukh.
They painted Aryan to be some spoilt rich brat , drug junkie and God knows what all?
Do we have any idea as to how we could conclude this ?
Of course , we have taken a virtual tour inside ‘Mannat’.
And we have devoured all the insta post and stories by his sister Suhana and all his close friends.
And we alternatively loved them and have been envious of their swanky and out of reach lifestyle.
Did not all these celebrity kids latch on their status and become social media influencers?
Now if these posts are being used to lash them , who is responsible?
*On other hand we had this passionate and loyal fan base of Shahrukh and ofcourse bollywood friends ( Who finally reluctantly supported him removing their muzzled masks )
These fans after Aryan was released gave him a hero welcome like he was the Man of Match of the cricket world cup India has just lifted .
Sadly neither did Aryan owned IPL team nor did Indian cricket team win any accolades since his release .

Fan hysteria outside Mannat

The point is if celebrities can latch on their status and gain commercially on their brand value and equity , then should they not suffer if they fall from grace ( Whether real or perceived ).
I like many others am convinced about Aryan innocence and have been in love with Shahrukh Khan since seeing him on a mobike in his first movie ‘Deewana’
But still I feel that every coin has 2 sides .
If you make all facets of your life open , if your profession is in public space and your success is dependent on the number of followers on twitter and instagram , if you let everyone have a right to comment and like on all your professional and personal aspects then you need to take it with a pinch of salt.
When public frenzy happens, either your family and home becomes major search either when you get laurels or in event of any defeat it gets ripped .( Ask Dhoni who better than to know how fickle minded we all are )
Both are extreme cases of public adulation.
Human beings have been fickle, passionate, extreme since ages ( Temples for Filmstars in South and worshipped like Gods precedes social media ).
Now what has changed now is that celebrities having realised the power of social media are now realising the flipside of the it too .
